Rating:

  • Articles and cartoons that deal with the Arab-Israeli conflict are rated for balance by a simple objective criterion. If more space is given to description of damage or hardship suffered by Arabs and to statements or quotes that blame Israel, the rating is P. If the reverse, the rating is I. If the space is the same, position and emphasis (including headlines and photos) become the determinant. If there is no imbalance in space or emphasis, the rating is N. Thus a rating of P or I can indicate anything from small imbalance within an article to a full-page propaganda piece.
  • Footnotes at the bottom of the tables provide further description of the item.

Footnotes

( 77 ) Israeli bomb site in Syria tested for nuclear reactivity Back to Southland Times

( 76 ) Story about Jews living on the Gaza strip and the West bank threatening violence if Israel go ahead with peace talks with the Palestinians. Back to Southland Times

( 75 ) Mentions peace agreements. Back to NZ Herald

( 74 ) There was something about the Akko/Achre riots in this article Back to NZ Herald

( 73 ) Although this article does not deal directly with the Israeli — Palestinian conflict, it provides background support and information relating to Israel's disgust at the Vatican's impotant behaviour during the Holocaust. This article is similar to an article about the Vatican's role in WW2 published today in the NZH, which was inaccurate. Back to Northern Advocate

( 72 ) Palestinians asked him not to play due to the West Bank Occupation. Back to Dominion Post

( 71 ) John Carter is the National MP for the Far North District and leads the Inter-Parliamentary Union delegation with ‘the aim of securing an ongoing dialogue between Israel and the Palestinians.’ Back to Northern Advocate

( 70 ) Comment. Excellent pictoral and graphic article which portrays the Hamas and Hezbollah as real terrorist groups. Back to Northern Advocate

( 69 ) An article and photo which puts into perspective the daily rocket attacks faced by Israel but hardly reported in the NZ media. Back to Northern Advocate

( 68 ) John Carter is the National MP for the Far North District. This article was on the front page and takes one eigth of the page. Back to Northern Advocate

( 67 ) Article covers top third of page 7, complete with photos, maps and inserts. Back to Northern Advocate

( 66 ) factual report, but damaging. Back to NZ Herald

( 65 ) Pro Iranianian rather than anti Israel. rating? Back to NZ Herald

( 64 ) Several paragraphs describing Palestinian crimes were unaccountably deleted. Back to Otago Daily Times

( 63 ) Emphasis on Israel's ‘crippling blockade’ and air strikes. Palestinian attacks not mentioned until 8th paragraph. Back to Otago Daily Times

( 62 ) The inset Palestinian quote ‘The Israeli occupation...'’ pushed a neutral article into the P column. Back to Otago Daily Times

( 61 ) Although the tone is neutral, primary emphasis is on Israel's ‘faults’. Back to Otago Daily Times

( 60 ) The large headline and accompanying photo correctly show that the greater damage is to Israel. Back to The Press

( 59 ) Factual report. Back to NZ Herald

( 58 ) A commentary on lack of reasooned debate on I/P issue from NZ politicians. Back to NZ Herald

( 57 ) Total blame placed on Israel for lack of settlement. Back to NZ Herald

( 56 ) Neutral — but patronising. Back to NZ Herald

( 55 )This is a highly inaccurate guest article, full of factual errors. Back to Northern Advocate

( 54 ) Second editorial. Back to Northern Advocate

( 53 ) I include this as the editor's response to the letter is telling. The letter was a reaction against the publication of Ed McLoughlin's article on 14/05/08. The editor replied: ‘There probably wouldn't be a good time to run such a piece in the eyes of the Jewish community. But the Sydney Morning Herald is our sister paper and their man spent 5 years observing the goings on. It was simply his view of the conflict.’ The editor failed to note that the Sydney Morning Herald had in fact chosen NOT to published the McLoughlin article. Back to Waikato Times

( 52 ) Although the text reads as neutral, the fact that the most unpopular United States president in recent years reportedly speaks in support of Israel creates a subtle anti-Israeli subtext. Back to Waikato Times

( 51 ) Full page feature with colour photos of a Palestinian family at an Israeli checkpoint and one ‘elderly Palestinian cancer patient’ being wheeled in a wheelchair to treatment out of Gaza. Back to Waikato Times

( 50 ) Extremely unfavourable articles — Israel's actions responsible for all suffering etc in Gaza. Back to NZ Herald

( 49 ) Anti Israel. Back to Herald on Sunday

( 48 ) Picture very unfriendly to israel. Back to Herald on Sunday

( 47 ) About death of Palestinian cameraman. Back to Sunday Star Times

( 46 ) Photo shows Palestinian with slingshot 'protesting' Israeli soldiers in a West Bank village. Back to Sunday Star Times

( 45 ) Headline correctly put the blame on Hamas. Back to The Press

( 44 ) Article is a criticism of someone who ‘blames Israel for just about everything’, but it is dominated by a 390 sq cm photo showing protest against the Israeli blockade. Back to The Press

( 43 ) About Israel/US relations, but paints a negative picture of Israel. Back to Otago Daily Times

( 42 ) The BBC web site has the heading ‘Hamas Rejects Israeli Recognition’ for same meeting. Back to NZ Herald

( 41 ) The accompanying photo contained the words ‘Stop Killing Gaza's Children’. Back to Waikato Times

( 40 ) The rater gave the headline a P and the article a N. Back to Waikato Times

( 39 ) This article paints the perpetuators as heros, despite the fact that the terminal is Gaza's lifeline. Back to NZ Herald

( 38 ) This short piece is first brief in the ‘World’ section and is highlighted in a bold colour. Back to Northern Advocate

( 37 ) Well researched but very one sided and a few of Fisks' usual half-truths. Back to NZ Herald

( 36 ) Blair puts the blame squarely on Hamas, not Israel. Back to The Press

( 35 ) Subheadline refers to ‘the Gaza siege’, puts emphasis on Palestinian hardship. Back to The Press

( 34 ) Holocaust in quotes in headline is incorrect. Back to Otago Daily Times

( 33 ) Accompanying photo (Reuters) of funeral of 16-year-old Israeli tips balance from N to I. Back to Otago Daily Times

( 32 ) Large colour photo of ‘newborn Palestinian baby’ killed by Israeli forces. Back to The Press

( 31 ) The headline with its erroneous word ‘revenge’ tips the balance toward P in what otherwise would have been an I-rated article. Back to The Press

( 30 ) Sub-headline (‘Israel must change...’) and photo of Hamas militant killed tip rating to P. Back to The Press

( 29 ) My earlier comments about the previous very brief coverage were clearly premature as the Mail has devoted approximately 1/3 of a page to this very fair and balanced article. Back to Nelson Mail

( 28 ) Photo of scene through glass with bullet holes and blood is in bad taste. Back to Herald on Sunday

( 27 ) A well balanced, thoughtful insight into land ownership in Israel. Back to Southland Times

( 26 ) This is the main This reportage of the terrorist attack in the yeshiva in Jerusalem was given a whopping 35mm in the ‘Briefly News’ section of the paper. The headline makes no mention that it was a Palestinian terror attack. If it was Israeli killings that were being reported I am sure that something like ‘Israel kills 7,’ would be the headline. In addition the terrorist is described in the article as a ‘militant’. Back to Nelson Mail

( 25 ) This is the main editorial and puts across Israel's predicament well. Back to Northern Advocate

( 24 ) Cartoon characturises Condolisa Rice dressed as a peace dove handing out guns and rockets to Israel. Back to Northern Advocate

( 23 ) This is the editorial opinion piece and comes alongside the main editorial. Back to Northern Advocate

( 22 ) The text is only mildly unbalanced, but the photo of Israeli soldiers firing from behind a wall with "Free Palestine" sends a huge message. Back to The Press

( 21 ) Another example of reaching into the barrel to find something bad about Israel. Back to Otago Daily Times

( 20 ) While the ODT can't seem to find space to print anything good about Israel, they managed to squeeze in this bizarre item about an ultra-Orthodox extremist. Back to Otago Daily Times

( 19 ) The headline deserves special censure for using the word ‘holocaust’ in quotes, when the article itself makes clear that the Hebrew word shoah means disaster, not holocaust. Back to Sunday Star Times

( 18 ) The fact that the attacks were in response to the continued rocket attacks is mentioned only at the end of the 5th paragraph. The emotive value of the opening line of the article ‘Israeli forces killed 4 Palestinian boys playing footballÉ’ makes the reader believe that Israel purposely targets children. This is yet another example of twisted reporting by Reuters. Back to NZ Herald

( 17 ) The least biased article that I have seen so far in the Nelson Mail. Back to NZ Nelson Mail

( 16 ) This is a full page article on the front of the ‘World’ section. Although dealing with the assination of Imad Mughniyeh, Israel is mentioned throughout the article. Fisk has balanced the article — to his credit. Back to NZ Herald

( 15 ) About UN draft that criticises Israel for situation in Gaza. Back to Sunday Star Times

( 14 ) Compare this article, with its emphasis on mourning for an ‘assassinated commander’, accompanied by a photo of grieving relatives, with the article in The Press (also Reuters) that headlines ‘world is a better place’ for his death. Back to Otago Daily Times

( 13 ) The shortage of food and staples is blamed on the Israeli blockade. Back to Otago Daily Times

( 12 ) Sarkozy blames ‘people who refuse to recognize Israel’. Back to The Press

( 11 ) Includes a Reuters photo of Palestinian women holding signs reading ‘Save Ghaza’. Back to Waikato Times

( 10 ) The article is accompanied by a large colour photo of a Palestinian girl protesting. Back to The Press

( 9 ) The article is neutral, but accompanying photos show a Palestinian protesting construction of a barrier and an Israeli soldier firing a tear-gas canister. Back to The Press

( 8 ) More space is given to the I side in the 13th par., but the second paragraph gives more emphasis to the P side. Back to The Press

( 7 ) The headline makes it sound like an attack. It should have read (Israel tests missile). Back to Otago Daily Times

( 6 ) The Headline got it wrong. The Ecuadorian was killed by a Palestinian sniper while working on an Israeli farm. Back to Otago Daily Times

( 5 ) This is a page full of 4 articles from different sources - all recieve a P rating including all the pictures. The articles are all one sided all and blame Israel for it's incursion into Gaza and only at the end of each article is a given as to why (Kasam rockets etc).
Reading through the Hebrew press, Israel is poised to take massive action to stem the daily rocket attacks from Gaza against civilian targets. The foreign press agencies have already laid the groundwork to blame Israel as the bullying aggressor. Back to NZ Herald

( 4 ) Adjectives and other descriptions are used to put down Israel's policies which have nothing to do with the title of the article. The reporter is using the article to express his/her opinions about Israel. Back to Northern Advocate

( 3 ) This is the first time I have seen an article in Southland Times in which the rocket attacks are mentioned in the same report as the Israel-Palestine peace process. Back to Southland Times

( 2 ) Borderline N. Others may rate this article a P . Back to NZ Herald

( 1 ) Major roads which are for the exclusive use of Israelis and cut through the Palestinian territories have always been a bone of contention even within Israel. Back to NZ Herald
