Rating:

  • Articles and cartoons that deal with the Arab-Israeli conflict are rated for balance by a simple objective criterion. If more space is given to description of damage or hardship suffered by Arabs and to statements or quotes that blame Israel, the rating is P. If the reverse, the rating is I. If the space is the same, position and emphasis (including headlines and photos) become the determinant. If there is no imbalance in space or emphasis, the rating is 0. Thus a rating of P or I can indicate anything from small imbalance within an article to a full-page propaganda piece.

  • In addition, comments are sometimes inserted to point out journalistic violations such as inaccuracy, omission of relevant facts, or pejorative language, but they do not affect the basic balance rating.

[9] This was a very anti-Israel article by the NA - full of inaccuracies and untruths.

[8] Refers to Israel refusing to negotiate with Hamas for a 'cease fire' (yeah right, who started firing the kassams anyway?!!)

[7] This is the main editorial. It refers to and condemns the renewed boycott of Israeli universities by UK university teachers.

[6] Although mainly internal, the NZH and the NA articles both mention the Arabs.

[5] This is the main editorial today.

[4] Gwynne Dyer usually writes articles with an anti-Israel slant, however, he takes the blame off Israel and puts it on the Arabs for the current impasse.

[3] Article does say that 'Hamas sees it only as a stage towards the elimination of Israel'.

[2] The name was changed from 'No, Prime Minister'

[1] The hothouses refererd to in the article were wrecked by the Palestinians immiediatly after Israel withdrew from Gaza, and not the closing of the Karni crossing as the chief problem.

[18]The body of the article is balanced, and for once Tim Butcher has got it right, however using the KBRM criteria, the title is very one sided.

[17]This article is basically true, however it does not stand up to to KBRM's criteria for balanced reporting.

[16]This is part of the main editorial and explains well Israel's position.

[15]The body of the article is balanced, however the headline could be construed as one sided.

[14]The blame for the current impasse is put on Israel only.

[13]This is a balanced article about a new Israeli / German film-Shabbat Shalom Maradonna-and Donald Macintyre gives a truthful honest appraisal of the film. In doing so he gives hasabara for both sides in the conflict.

[12]Whatever Israel does to defend itself it will be condemned.

[11]Israel is used to threats from much bigger nations. This refers to the war of words with Iran.

[10]The author is a well known Pastor in an East Jerusalem Baptist church. He has written 2 books on the ME conflict and should know better than to include such blatent one sided inaccuracies.

[9]This article is about one the terrorists captured in the UK. It has nothing to do with Israel. However the author (no doubt Tim Butcher, famous for his anti- Israel slurs) could not resist a one sided punch at Israel, by saying that he 'comes from the Jordanian population of Palestinians made refugees by Israel.

[8]The author only shows that she has a massive lack of knowledge about the Mid-east.

[7]Again a very anti-Israel article. Lack of knowledge about the complexities (or ignoring the Israeli side of the situation) makes this a very one-sided 3\4 page article.

[6]This article scrapes in a 0, it could be rated as a P but has some balance in it.

[5]Extreemly one-sided and unbalanced atricle. Two thirds of the article is taken up by a schematic diagram of a checkpost. Much emphasis is devoted to the delaying of ambulances 'even on emergency calls' - no mention is given to the fact that these ambulances are delayed since they have been a favoured method of explosives and people smuggling.

[4]The impression is given in the title and to a certain extent in the article that Israel is chucking a few missiles into the fray just to add 'fuel to the fire'.

[3] Although Israel must take some blame for the current situation, the article is one sided. It does not say that the reason that only now after all these years do the Arabs have a minister in the Israeli government is because they refused to take the vows of allegiance. They are not conscripted (a few volunteer) and the Israeli Arabs enjoy the highest standard of living by far then any of the general Arab populations. But the thing that really knocks the article is the picture supplied by Reuters (not the Telegraph who supplied the text). It is supposed to be an Israeli policeman confronting an Arab. However it, upon examination, it clearly shows a policeman confronting a Jewish settler!

[2]Blame on Israel

[1]Israel is blamed as the one who blocking peace moves.

[6]although it does mention in its concluding paragraph, ‘But the Islamist group continues to say it will not formally recognise Israel and its 1988 founding charter calls for the destruction of the Jewish state’, Judea and Samaria are referred to as ‘the occupied west bank’ and reference is made to a funeral for ‘three militants killed in an Israeli air strike’ — that the militants were killed by Israeli action does not add anything to the main story.

[5]The article opens with ‘Israeli restrictions have caused a humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the West Bank that is growing worse’ and continues in the same vein, citing the International Red Cross as the source of commentary. No accusations are laid against Hamas or Fatah for contributing to the misery of Palestinians living in Gaza.

[4]Article was balanced, but the use of 'Palestinian Mandela' in the headline (instead of 'ruthless terrorist') tipped the scale.

[3]Depends on how word 'diktat' in headline is taken. Could go either way.

[2]It is made clear in the article that HizbollahÕs rearmament is defensive.

[1]Mostly about Iraq, but refers to "worst refugee crisis since the Palestinian expulsions of 1948".

[4] Minto, a regular Press columnist, starts with the lie that ‘hundreds of thousands of Arabs were driven from their homes’ by the Jews, and concludes that ‘a single state is the only path to peace ’ - which is another way of calling for the destruction of Israel as a Jewish state.

[3] While the article itself is balanced, the accompanying large photo by Reuters of a Palestinian woman crying because five ‘Hamas militants’ were killed by an Israeli missile strike puts the emphasis on Palestinian suffering.

[2]A large (250 sq cm) photo tipped the scale in this otherwise well-balanced article.

[1]There has been a recent shift in Dyer's opinion columns. He used to be quick to put most of the blame on Israel.

Palestinian leaders call for Gaza peace

Reuters

P

[30] lsrael never promised to halt construction within the municipal borders of Jerusalem, whose eastern sector lsrael annexed after capturing it in the 1967 Mideast war.

[29] The same old nonsence from Mr Dyer anti west and pro Arab.

[28] A just and valid request by lsrael.

[27] This was nothing to do with Palestine and lsrael, it may be just a dig at Olmert and who is to say its balanced.

[26] Also in this item U.S. defence officials confirmed lsrael carried out an air strike well inside Syria warning Damascus not to rearm Hizbollah in lebanon.

[25] Are there such things as steel covered rubber bullets? As reported in the item.

[24] Claims by Syria that Palestinian cause would be betrayed.

[23] Mr Galloway thumping his pro palestinian/muslim drum

[22] So Israel hands over 250 prisoners what exactly are the Palestinians conceding?

[21] Palestinian ambulances are notorious for conveying weapons, terrorist personnel and explosives.

[20] Hamas' next step to be freeing Israeli soldier Cpl Shalit????

[19] Typical Gwynne Dyer, this well-established prophet of doom and gloom, very negative towards Israel with his usual denegration of anything to do with the Jews.

[18] Although the article may be balanced reporting of the subject, the content of the article is as usual, ie all the conceding is being undertaken by the Israelies. What are the Palestinians conceding? NOTHING!!!

[17] Just a point not mentioned; Israeli's Prime Minister, Ehud Olmert had been prepared to visit the volatile and dangerous Palestine territory to attend the meeting.

[16]An article from TIME magazine from June 1967, after the conclusion of the six day war came my way today. Accompanying the article were these words, the absence of cynicism and bias in this piece is a very marked contrast to the TIME magazine of today. Reading TIME magazine's account of the Six Day War, written in June 1967 shortly after it finished, is an amazing experience. And notice: not once are the Arabs who lived in the area referred to as Palestinians.
What a contrast to Dyer also. Muslim Arabs have been kept poor and used by Islamist extremists to gender sympathy from the West and we fall for it hook line and sinker.

[15]If it were not for yet another photo of damage to a Palestinian compound this would have been considered an even article. We are not shown the damage caused by rocket fire into Israel.

[14]Headlines, 1st paragraph and photo clearly carry more weight than the actual space in the rest of the blurb, and this would lead readers to blame Israel. How many ordinary readers, take in the whole article anyway?

[13]An emotive photo of a young Arab boy injured and crying. At last a small mention of the woman who was killed in Israel.

[12]Another photo of Palestinian damage! I have looked in vain for a news item on the Israeli civilian woman, Shirel Friedman, 32, of Sderot who was was killed from one of the rockets fired from Islamic jihad militants into Israel.

[11]Once again the photo is of Palestinian damage which made the decision difficult. Perhaps it should have received a P for this reason. Not one photo has appeared of Israeli damage in spite of 47 rockets being fired into Israel last week. More than 1,300 rockets have been fired into Israel since the Gaza withdrawal.

[10]The situation for Israel is tenuous and recent difficulties within the present Israeli government don't help. I feel Gwynne Dyer looks ahead to the demise of Israel.

[9] Two Tunnels used by militant Palestinians to smuggle arms into Gaza, have been discovered by Egyptian authorities.

[8] Palestinian President threatens Israel with more violence if the proposed peace plan is rejected. Israel is taking the offer seriously but in my opinion cannot afford to accept the plan as is. That would be suicide.

[7] Israel cannot afford to accept the plan as is. Just as Palestinian Arabs left Israel at the time the UN voted Israel into existence, an almost equal number of Jews also fled Arab lands and were integrated into Israel. Since then many Jews have been murdered in Arab lands, especially under Saddam Hussein's reign in Iraq. Those Arabs who left, chose to leave, believing that the Arabs were going to drive the Jews into the sea. Sixty years have now passed and it is up to the Arabs within those countries where they now live (Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, and other countries), to allow the descendants to live in peace in their Arab lands. Arab policy kept them as refugees for propaganda purposes.

[6] I gave this one a I. Although it was mostly about Palestinans' infighting between Fatah and Hamas using violence and killing, there was no blame on Israel and the last paragraphs stated that Hamas' armed wing is attacking Israel again and that they do not recognise Israel nor will they renounce violence etc. ( Notice the violence between Palestinian factions as compared with the peaceful means used in the Israeli dispute of yesterday's "General strike threat as talks break down in Israel."

[5] Israel is a democracy which allows people to differ and openly voice and use peaceful means when they differ with government. Municipal workers who have not been paid for months are intending to strike.

[4] Israel is installing security cameras at the Mughrabi excavation which will broadcast real-time footage of the work outside the Temple Mount.
The Mughrabi ramp collapsed in 2004! Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Tzipi Livni made the following comments:
"The Temple Mount is the site most holy to the Jewish people. The State of Israel will never to anything to harm the freedom of worship of members of all religions - in Jerusalem or anywhere in Israel.

There are irresponsible elements, who know full well that no harm is being caused here to any holy site, who are exploiting Israeli democracy to fan religious feelings for political gain. This is true of both political groups within Israel and extremist elements outside Israel."
Statement by FM Livni on the Mugrabim ramp construction work 7 Feb 2007

[3] Opinion column. Former Israeli Defence Force chief, Moshe Ya'lon, outlines the dangers Islamic Jihadists represent to the sleeping West with Islam's goal of a world adhering to its ideological beliefs. This began before Israel existed. Education is the key.

[2] Fatah and Hamas officials agree to peace but there is none.

[1] Palestinian infighting between Fatah and Hamas.
