Rating:

  • Articles and cartoons that deal with the Arab-Israeli conflict are rated for balance by a simple objective criterion. If more space is given to description of damage or hardship suffered by Arabs and to statements or quotes that blame Israel, the rating is P. If the reverse, the rating is I. If the space is the same, position and emphasis (including headlines and photos) become the determinant. If there is no imbalance in space or emphasis, the rating is 0. Thus a rating of P or I can indicate anything from small imbalance within an article to a full-page propaganda piece.

  • In addition, comments are sometimes inserted to point out journalistic violations such as inaccuracy, omission of relevant facts, or pejorative language, but they do not affect the basic balance rating.

[11] Ehud Olmert made an announcement that many Palestinians would be released in return for Gilad Shalit but, Hamas demand over 1000 prisoners to be released. Condoleezza Rice welcomed his speech which also stated that frozen funds would be freed up and many West Bank settlements dismantled if a Palestinian unity government was formed which recognised Israel and renounced violence. It seems ungodly militant extremist organisations seem to weild an evil hold, thwarting all peace between the two peoples.

[10] Hamas militants firing rockets after a ceasefire has been declared.

[9] Gwynne Dyer leaves out important details, such as ( in bold ) the fact that it was the killing of eight Israeli soldiers along with the seizure of two on Israeli territory, which triggered the recent Lebanon war. His wording implies that the war began from just 2 Israeli soldiers being kidnapped which is misleading. In the last column he states, "That is not literally true", when referring to the heading. Much else is biased speculation.

[8] A Catholic Priest and Nun, both peace activists, joined Palestinians providing a human shield in the the homes of 5 militant's responsible for rocket attacks into Israel. Not mentioned was that using civilians where it endangers lives, violates international law, nor that Israel warned that the homes of militants who fire rockets into Israel will be targeted in an attempt to discourage rocket attacks. Israel advises Palestinians prior to such occasions. The photo depicted the sit in with very young children present.

[7] The UN high Commissioner for human rights, Louise Arbour, was visiting a border town when a Palestinian rocket landed a few hundred yards away critically wounding a man. Hamas's military wing have admitted to launching rockets at the time.

[6] New tactics being used by Palestinians to protect militants.

[5] A mention that a woman was killed by a rocket attack from Gaza and that another person was wounded - In actual fact a barrage of some 16 Kassam rockets killed an elderly Muslim woman, a young man (aged 24) had both legs amputated, another (aged 17) was seriously injured and four others were injured.

[4] Not factual - Israeli people desperately want peace.

[3] Article included a large photo of a Palestinian. When was war ever just - the innocent die along with the guilty, especially when they live among militants who fire rockets from civilian areas.

[2] Photo of pets with caption which mentioned why pets became homeless in Northern Israel during the Lebanon war.

[1]The article failed to mention that some of the 'women' were in fact men in women's clothes and that the Israeli soldiers fired rubber bullets first to try to discourage the woman.
